Solar Power Applications
If you’re designing a commercial solar power installation, you know that photovoltaic installations have some unique requirements. One of which is specifying the cable you use to collect the power from the combiner panel(s) to the load controller and inverter and switch gear. ASG can produce PV (photovoltaic) cables that meet the requirements of UL standard 4703, which deals with photovoltaic cable applications.
Insulation must handle environmental conditions
In typical solar installations, the collection cables may be direct-buried, or may lie on the ground exposed to direct sunlight and weather, or on a roof top exposed to high heat and significant “weathering” . Exposure to the elements requires the cable construction be able to accommodate these conditions in addition to the appropriate voltage ratings.
PV Cables must be sunlight-resistant, as well as suitable for direct burial. They should also be RoHS compliant. Typically, these cables are rated for 90°C operation in wet or dry locations. Insulation is 0.075″ (1.9mm) to 0.085″ (2.16 mm) of cross-linked polyethylene (XLP).
ASG can supply these cables in tinned copper termination or with any specific connector type, depending on your application.
Two kV ratings are commonly used
Typical commercial solar installations operate at collection voltages that require a 2KV-rated cable. Cables rated at 600V and carry a PV rating may be seen in residential applications.
ASG uses cable with a two layer construction with a low smoke halogen-free, flame retardant and sunlight resistant cross-linked compound outer layer and halogen-free thermoset polyolefin inner layer.
